Only a relative few Canadians will win a major lottery prize, and when it happens, there are many different ways that they will react.
Some will be left stunned into silence, while others may burst into tears or high-five the lotto attendant.
And others will immediately think of ways to celebrate their new windfall.
Three recent lucky Canadian lottery players got to do just that when they won the Extra prize from Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, and the Daily Grand.
Here’s a round-up of the winners and how they celebrated having an extra six figures in their bank accounts.
Travelling around the world

Randall Dunn of Vernon, B.C., initially thought that his $500,000 Extra prize from the August 20, 2025, Lotto 6/49 draw was a mistake.
“I was at the store, and I thought the machine malfunctioned,” said Dunn. “I checked (using the self-scanner) three times and then took it up to the counter because I wasn’t sure.”
Dunn said that his husband did a little happy dance when they saw the claim slip. He also shared that he will be celebrating with a nice dinner and travel plans to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in the near future.
“Amazing. It will make things easier as we work into retirement,” he added when asked about how it felt to win in the lottery.
Buying a round of drinks

Patricia Ross and her son were also left shocked when she won the Extra prize from the September 2, 2025, Lotto Max draw.
“I was at home and checked (the numbers) online,” Ross shared of the moment she realized she won $500,000. “I couldn’t believe it; I was in disbelief.”
The Gibsons, B.C., resident shared that she rang the bell at the legion, which meant that she was going to buy a drink for the house.
“I’m quite happy. I feel like a lottery winner,” she added.
Enjoying a favourite treat

BCLC
Timothy Hockridge of Abbotsford, B.C. had an extraordinary day when he discovered that he won a $500,000 Extra prize from the August 21, 2025, Daily Grand draw.
“I was at home and looking at the numbers of my Daily Grand tickets,” explained Hockridge. “I then took it to the gas station and scanned it at the self-scanner.”
The Frasey Vaklley resident first told his neighbour about his lotto win.
“He came over, and when I told him, he said a few choice words because he was so shocked.”
Hockridge said that winning the lottery feels “awesome” as it opens up options for his lifestyle.
But to reward himself for the Extra win, he added, “I am going to celebrate with an Iced Capp.”
