A coffee run with his son led to a Canadian lottery player scoring a huge $1 million jackpot prize, and he’s using it to care for his family.

Han Sim of Burnaby, B.C., tagged along when his son decided to go for coffee. While they were out, he bought a ticket for the July 5, 2025, Lotto 6/49 draw.

When shopping for groceries, Sim learned that his ticket had won him $1 million.

“I was at Save-On-Foods,” Sim said of the moment he discovered his win. “I googled the combo eight, matched three numbers, and I looked at the Extra and I matched two numbers.”

Sim had bought the winning ticket at the Save-On-Foods inside Madison Centre on Lougheed Highway in Burnaby.

The Metro Vancouver resident couldn’t wait to share the good news with his wife.

“She was still sleeping; she couldn’t believe it,” he shared. He also told his two sons and daughter-in-law about his windfall.

“I said we’ll go to Harrison Hot Springs together and have a good dinner.”

Sim also has plans to take the family on a holiday and use his prize money to help his sons with their mortgages.

When asked how it felt to win $1 million, Sim replied, “I think it will feel more real once I deposit [the cheque] at the bank.”
