Canadian professor a millionaire after lottery win, eyes 'comfortable' retirement
One Canadian professor is celebrating a life-changing lottery win that could make his retirement years a whole lot more comfortable.
Lottery winner Steven M. lives in Waterford, Ont., where he works as a college professor of mechanical engineering. One day, he recalled seeing a commercial for Lotto 6/49, so he decided to try his luck and buy a ticket online.
“When I checked my email and discovered I won big, I screamed, ‘Is this for real?’ It took a moment for it to sink in,” he said.
The 61-year-old couldn’t believe his luck — he had won the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball Draw on July 8, 2026, instantly becoming $1 million richer. He said he shared the news with his wife, son, and daughter, but they were all equally shocked.
“Everyone was happy for us, and very surprised,” Steven shared. “My twin brother was in shock.”

While at the OLG Prize Centre to claim his prize, he said that now that he’s $1 million richer, he’s looking forward to a comfortable retirement for himself and his wife. He also wants to help his kids, travel to Scotland, and buy a hot tub.
“I’ve spent my life preparing tomorrow’s leaders in my field, and after giving so much to the community, I’m happy to start the next chapter of my life,” said Steven.
The winning ticket was purchased on OLG.ca.
Another lottery player scored a life-changing win over the weekend.
Someone hit the jackpot during the Lotto 6/49 draw that took place on Saturday, Aug. 8, instantly becoming $44 million richer. According to WCLC, the ticket was sold in Saskatoon, Sask.
