One lucky Canadian woman is ready to upgrade her home after an online game led to a surprising lottery win.

Sophie Breton lives in Montreal, Que., where she works as a teacher. Rather than buying lottery tickets in person, Breton said that she purchases hers online. Occasionally, she also plays other games such as Cleopatra Grand.

While playing the game on March 9, she was thrilled to discover that she had won $450.

“The news made my day!” she recalled.

However, that same day, she said that a Loto-Québec employee had left her a message. When she called back, the representative informed her that she had won a much larger prize — the game’s progressive jackpot worth $1,446,012.

Breton said she was speechless.

She was then asked to confirm her win by logging into her online account. It was only then that Breton finally decided to share the exciting news with her partner.

She showed up at Loto-Québec’s headquarters on April 1 to pick up her cheque. Now with $1.4 million in her bank account, the new millionaire said she already has plans for her winnings: she’s ready to go house-hunting and buy a home in Gaspésie, a peninsula in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Recently, another Quebec lottery player celebrated a life-altering win.

Estrie resident Shirley Haun won the Lotto 6/49 $5-million Classic Jackpot in the April 5 draw.

Haun shared that she has a long-standing agreement with her younger sister, Barb, who lives in British Columbia, that if one of them wins a lottery jackpot, they have to share it equally with the other. Read her full story here.
