A Quebec lottery player made good on her promise to share any wins with her sister on the other side of the country.

Estrie resident Shirley Haun won the Lotto 6/49 $5-million Classic Jackpot in the April 5 draw.

She has a long-standing agreement with her younger sister, Barb, who lives in British Columbia, that if one of them wins a lottery jackpot, they have to share it equally with the other.

Haun found out about her huge win early the day after the draw. She immediately tried contacting her sister, who was still asleep because of the time difference.

The lottery winner sent her sister text messages, hoping that the sound of her cell phone would eventually wake her up.

When Haun finally spoke with her sister, Barb couldn’t believe it.

The new multimillionaire received her cheque during a celebratory event at the retailer that sold her lottery ticket, alongside the store’s manager, MĂ©lanie Villeneuve.

The Couche-Tard convenience store at 705 Boulevard Jacques-Cartier Nord in Sherbrooke will receive a one per cent commission of $50,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Haun’s plans with her lottery windfall include spoiling other loved ones and making donations to causes that are dear to her, especially those related to animals.

There were other big wins recently.

One Canadian nabbed a jackpot after playing her late husband’s go-to numbers.

Calmar, Alta. resident Pearl Matthews won $250,000 on a Western 6/49 and Extra ticket thanks to her late husband’s lucky numbers.

“My husband died over a year ago, and I started to play his numbers,” she explained to the Western Canadian Lottery Corporation (WCLC). “I play twice a week now!”

Another player in Ontario won playing the same lottery numbers for 20 years.

Laurie Kent finally achieved her first big Lotto 6/49 win, taking home a life-changing second prize worth $105,904.20 in the March 19 draw.
