One Canadian’s ordinary day quickly turned into a memorable one after learning that he had won millions in the lottery.
Shawn Batten is an IT entrepreneur and lottery player who lives in Montérégie, Que., and buys his tickets online. One day, he purchased a Lotto Max ticket through the Loto–Québec app, hoping to try his luck in the draw on Tuesday, May 19.
The following day, Batten had been going about his day when he received a phone call. It was a Loto–Québec employee with some life-changing news: the ticket he purchased online had won him half of the $25-million Lotto Max jackpot, making him instantly $12.5 million richer. A lottery winner in Alberta won the other $12.5 million.

After learning of his win, the surprised winner said, “You’ve just made my day!”
When he finished confirming his win by logging in to his account, he immediately called his spouse to share the news.
He said she responded by stating, “I’m in a meeting, and all the team can hear you. You’re not joking right now, are you?”
When it came to receiving his prize, Loto–Québec organized a special event for the go-kart enthusiast at the Casino de Montréal, where the family got to admire a car owned by racing legend Michael Schumacher.

Despite his $12.5-million windfall, Batten said he has no plans to quit working; however, he wants to spend more on his interests and hobbies.
“Travel is in the cards for sure,” he shared. “Thanks to my daughter, I’ve discovered photography, so I think I’ll be able to spend more time doing that… and maybe buy a cottage, too!”
