A trip to the gas station for a Metro Vancouver lottery winner ended up filling more than his vehicle’s tank.

Sam Choi of Surrey was at Chevron on 104th Street and Scott Road when he learned he won $1 million from the July 26, 2025 Lotto 6/49 draw.

“I thought something was wrong at first (on the self-scanner),” shared Choi about the moment he realized he won a big prize.

“I saw the purple numbers and saw six digits, so I knew it was good.”

The Surrey resident added that he was most excited to share the news with his wife, though she didn’t believe him at first.

“She was shocked and didn’t believe it. She had a happy face and thought I was joking!”

Choi revealed that he’s going to take some time to decide how to spend his $1 million windfall, and that he plans to continue working.

When asked how it feels to win in the lottery, he replied, “I’m really happy!”

Choi purchased the winning ticket at Quick N’ Convenient on University Drive in Surrey.
