If you have a free play to use up while playing the lottery, consider this your sign to use it because one Canadian lottery player netted a hefty win by doing so.

Camrose, Alta., resident Derrick Best landed $100,000 on the July 23 draw on his Western 649 and Extra ticket.

“The first ticket I scanned was the winner,” he explained to Lotto Spot while claiming his prize. “The cashier looked at the amount and said, ‘You won a lot of money!’”

Best said his first reaction was a bit on the busy side, doing circles in the store upon learning of the big win.

“Oh, and I was like, ‘Are you f—ing kidding me?!’ I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all,” he continued. “It feels so surreal.”

The new winner said he has one main idea for his windfall.

“I’m going to pay off my mortgage!” he beamed. “I’m that much closer to being debt-free!”

Best redeemed a Western 649 Free Play at the 7-Eleven located at 618 10 St. in Wainwright. He paid $1 to add Extra to his ticket. The Extra numbers for the July 23 draw were: 6786123; Best’s ticket matched the last six digits.
