A routine stop at the gas station turned into a life-changing day for a Canadian lottery player.

Marshall Charles Willson of Merritt, B.C., took the opportunity to check several of his lottery tickets, and one scored him a $1 million jackpot from the Lotto 6/49 draw held on January 1, 2025.

“I was checking tickets at the self-scanner,” Willson said of the moment he discovered his win. “The lady at the counter checked for me as well.”

Wilson bought and validated his winning ticket at the Shell station on De Wolf Way in Merritt.

The first person he called was his son, who was pleasantly shocked by the news.

“He didn’t believe it, but he was very happy for me and for this to help our retirement.”

The Nicola Valley resident shared that he plans to use his windfall to make upgrades to his home, care for his wife, and save the rest for retirement.

When asked how he felt about his $1 million lottery win, Wilson replied simply, “Very fortunate.”
