A couple from Bonnyville, Alta., say their million-dollar lottery win comes on the heels of a recent trying battle with cancer.

Lorraine and Clyde Delurey say their $1-million Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball draw win on March 4 marks the end of a “very difficult” time for them, with Clyde recently spending six months being treated for an aggressive cancer that they were told couldn’t be cured.

“My wife looked after me day and night when I was sick. She never left my side,” Clyde said while speaking to Lotto Spot, adding that he is now cancer-free. “We went from the lowest of lows to now the highest of highs. This is our happy moment!”

Lorraine said she was making coffee one morning when she decided to check some tickets, and when she saw all the zeros appear, she went to wake up Clyde.

“He initially thought something bad was happening, and I assured him, ‘Don’t worry, this is really good,'” added Lorraine.

The couple has been married for 49 years and is excited to spend more years together enjoying their windfall, even tossing out the idea of celebrating their Golden anniversary in a big way.

Other than paying off a new truck, the Delureys said they have a few ideas for their winnings.

“We’re going to help our kids buy their first home,” Lorraine said to Lotto Spot. “We know we won a million dollars and we’re just going to carry on comfortably in our retirement.”

“It’s funny,” added Lorraine. “The day before I checked my ticket, I saw there had been a $100,000 win from Alberta, and I thought, ‘Oh, now good for them!’ And now we’ve won even bigger!”

The Delureys purchased their winning Lotto 6/49 ticket from Red Rooster #1 at 5402 50th Ave. in Bonnyville. They won their prize in the March 4 Gold Ball draw with the selection: 26538682-01, a white ball.
