Retire or keep working? Canadian lottery winner makes a choice after $5M win
What would you do if you became a multimillionaire after a major lottery win? Would you hang up your hat and retire, or keep working?
One Canadian was faced with that very question after winning a lottery prize.
Alexandre Patoine is a resident of Chaudière-Appalaches, Quebec, in his thirties. He has a routine — buying a couple of lottery tickets to wrap up the work week. He stopped at the DépaMax Sainte-Marie convenience store in Sainte-Marie, where he decided to splurge on a $5 million Extrême ticket, a scratch-n-win ticket that costs $50 per play.
Patoine didn’t waste a second and played his ticket at the store, scratching it to see if he won. To his surprise, he uncovered the number 37 in the final game — it was the number that won him the $5 million top prize.

He then rushed over to have his ticket validated, recalling the sound of the terminal announcing his win.
“It sounded good!” said Patoine.
He said his partner and family members were thrilled when he shared the happy news.
While at the Loto-Québec headquarters to claim his giant, life-changing cheque, he shared plans for what he wants to do now that he’s a multimillionaire before 40; he said he wants to use the money to spoil loved ones. And as for his job, he has no immediate plans to retire and wants to keep working.
The winning ticket was purchased at the DépaMax Sainte-Marie convenience store at 1444 Rue Notre-Dame Nord in Sainte-Marie, Quebec. The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $50,000.
