Canadian drivers could be part of a recently filed nationwide class-action lawsuit against Honda over alleged vehicle defects.

Quebec-based law firm Lex Group Inc. filed a class-action lawsuit against Honda in the Superior Court of Quebec on July 17. The lawsuit was filed against Honda and Acura due to an alleged defective design in its rear-glass system prone to breaking or shattering with no impact. To date, Honda has not issued a recall in Canada to address this design issue. A lawsuit was filed against Honda in the U.S. over similar allegations.

What were the allegations?

According to the court document, Honda marketed the vehicles as “safe, reliable, and high-performing vehicles.” However, it states that the rear glass system is defectively designed.

The lawsuit alleges that Honda failed to disclose a design flaw that would make each affected vehicle’s windows prone to shatter or break unexpectedly with no external impact. This can happen while driving, while the vehicle is parked, or when simply closing one of the vehicle’s doors.

According to the claims, Honda should have been aware of the issue and associated risks due to numerous complaints and media reports in the U.S. and Canada. It further alleges that the company continues to sell and lease the defective vehicles without addressing or disclosing the issue.

The document states that Honda “does not currently have a remedy or fix to properly address the defect” or to bring back the affected vehicles, permitting them to continue driving dangerous vehicles.

Honda faces allegations of negligence and breaching several consumer protection laws.
