After a multimillion-dollar win, one Canadian lottery player has one priority on her list: paying off her mortgage.

One day, Jodine Baker purchased a ticket at the Bedford Mill Cove Needs in Bedford, N.S. The financial administrator and Halifax resident, who’s originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, decided to try her luck by buying a Vault scratch n’ win lottery ticket.

While playing her ticket, Baker saw that she managed to match the numbers — she had won a $100,000 prize. But something didn’t add up, and she was in for a bigger shock.

“I yelled to Mark, ‘I think I won $100,000, but I don’t understand. It says 20X — something must be wrong,'” she recalled. “Mark was like, ‘Well, that means $2 million! Do your math!'”

In disbelief, she used the Atlantic Lottery app to check her ticket — she really was $2 million richer.

While claiming her winnings, she said she’s planning to take a trip home to Newfoundland.

“As soon as I got off the phone with Atlantic Lottery, I booked a ticket to Newfoundland. I’m going home for a weekend because I can,” Baker said. “I’m going home for the weekend, and I’m going to celebrate with them, and it’s going to be a good time. Newfoundlanders know how to party.”

The winner is looking forward to greater financial freedom as she plans to pay off her mortgage. She’s also going to buy a new truck and vehicles for her children. Baker is also planning her first trip down south.

And although she loves her job and wants to continue working, retirement plans may come sooner than planned.

“It’s very life-changing, coming from nothing to having options,” Baker shared. “We’re going to be mortgage-free; that is all I can think about. I can go wherever I want and give my kids what they want.”
