Colourful foliage, cozy sweaters, and crisp, cool air: these are just a few of the things that make fall such a wonderful time to travel. And if you’re looking to explore a little closer to home this season, there’s no shortage of breathtaking places to discover right here in Canada.

Whether you’re hopping on a plane, catching the train, or loading up the car with your best friend, a few coffees, and a rockin’ playlist, you really can’t go wrong with the direction you take — literally.

Your fall getaway doesn’t have to mean navigating the crowds of Toronto or Vancouver, either. In fact, some reports even suggest younger Canadians are ditching big cities and visiting smaller towns instead this season.

And there’s something undeniably special about seeing Canada in the fall months, as the season often brings out a different, softer side of the country. Of course, we can’t forget all the pretty hues of green, amber, and red that would look right at home on a postcard.

To plant a few seeds of inspiration for your next autumn adventure, here are some gorgeous destinations across the country that everyone should visit at least once in the fall.

Located just 45 minutes north of Quebec City, Jacques-Cartier National Park is a beautiful spot to take in the province’s fall colours. With more than 100 kilometres of hiking trails winding through forests, valleys and scenic landscapes, there are plenty of ways to explore and lots to photograph if you happen to be a shutterbug.

The colours historically reach their brightest in early October, but really, there’s no bad time to visit in the fall.

Meat Cove, N.S.

Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is home to some incredible natural scenery, from flowing rivers and cascading waterfalls to rolling hills and peaceful lakes. But if you’re looking for somewhere that feels a little more off the beaten path, Meat Cove is a spot worth adding to your fall bucket list.

Tucked into the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, Meat Cove is surrounded by plenty of cliffs, forests and ocean views. You can camp or hike through the area, but even a scenic drive gives you the chance to take in the gorgeous views and fall colours.

In the fall, Unionville’s tree-lined streets come alive with vibrant red, orange and yellow hues, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. There are so many cozy cafes and cute boutiques to check out, you’ll be busy for the whole weekend.

Stretching 740 kilometres from Dawson City, Yukon, to Inuvik, N.W.T., the Dempster Highway is one road you’ll want to venture down at least once in your life. The remote route takes you through huge open landscapes, colourful tundra, and towering mountains, with fall colours arriving early. Hopefully gas prices aren’t too high these days… but at least the views are free.

Assiniboine Forest, Man.

Hiking, horseback riding, corn mazes, pumpkin patches; there’s plenty to do in Manitoba once fall rolls around. If you’re craving peace and serenity, head over to Assiniboine Forest, just a five-minute drive from the provincial park of the same name.

With its winding trails and colourful autumn scenery, it’s an easy escape from the hustle and bustle. Take a stroll through the forest, and you might spot waterfowl, white-tailed deer, songbirds, and other impressive wildlife as though you’ve stepped into a real-life Disney movie.

Smoky Lake, Alta.

Known as the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta, Smoky Lake is a charming spot just over an hour northeast of Edmonton. You can wander through Pumpkin Park and check out its larger-than-life concrete pumpkins, tee off at Smoky Lake Golf Club or, if you’re feeling adventurous, hit the nearby waterways for some seasonal canoeing or kayaking.

Kananaskis Country, Alta.

Fall in Kananaskis Country, near Canmore, has been described by Alberta’s tourism board as “all the gold, without the rush,” and it’s easy to see why. When the larches and aspens turn golden, the Canadian Rockies become even more magical, with plenty of scenic trails and mountain views to enjoy.

Getting there is easy, too. From Calgary, it’s about an hour’s drive west along the Trans-Canada Highway. Just remember to grab a Conservation Pass before you go.
