Key dates and deadlines Canadians should know this tax season

Tax filing season is almost upon us, so here are the key dates and deadlines in Canada you should mark on your calendar this year.

“By filing and paying any taxes you owe on time, you will avoid late-filing penalties and interest,” said the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

The first important date is Monday, Feb. 24. That’s when the CRA Netfile, or online tax filing service, opens.

According to the CRA, Netfile is available to most taxpayers, except for certain restrictions.

The following key date is Friday, Feb. 28, the last day for Canadian employers and the CRA to issue employees’ T4s, T4As, and T5s. You should’ve gained access to these forms within a few days of this deadline.

Monday, March 3 is the deadline to contribute to your RRSP for the 2024 tax year.

RRSP contributions are tax-deferred, which means that your contributions are income-tax deductible.

If you’re already feeling overwhelmed, Daily Hive spoke with an expert on the best ways to make filing taxes stress-free.

It’s also helpful to be aware of the tax incentives homeowners, families, and students should take advantage of and the credits and deductions Canadians can claim to get a bigger return.

Now that you hopefully have all of your forms and claims ready to go, it’s time to file you’re taxes before the deadlines.

The two main tax deadlines in Canada this year are Wednesday, April 30 and Monday, June 16.

April 30 is the tax filing deadline for all regularly employed Canadians. You will need to have all of your taxes filed by this date, or you could start incurring penalties if you have a balance that you owe the CRA.

Self-employed Canadians have more time to file taxes with a June 16 deadline.

However, regardless of whether you’re self-employed, any Canadian who owes taxes should pay them by April 30.

Here’s the list of deadlines:

  • Feb. 24 – You can start filing your 2024 tax return online
  • Feb. 28 – You should have your T4s, T4As, and T5s from your employer
  • March 3 – Deadline to contribute to your RRSP
  • April 30 – Deadline for most individuals to file their tax return and pay any taxes owed
  • June 15, 2025 – Deadline to file your tax return if you, or your spouse or common-law partner, are self-employed
