Two schools in Canada made a prestigious ranking of the world’s top 50 universities of 2026.

Time and Statista R unveiled its inaugural edition of the World’s Top Universities of 2026 this week, highlighting institutions around the globe that “drive academic excellence globally.”

“The ranking places emphasis on the extent to which students achieve extraordinary success, for instance, in patenting new inventions or rising to leadership roles in business,” reads the report. “These lists help us understand where students are likely to achieve the greatest success and contribute most to society as the world order shifts.”

Time considered several criteria when ranking the universities. The institutions had to be older than three years, offer bachelor’s degrees, and enroll more than 2,000 students.

It must also have at least one of the highly cited researchers among their faculty, be among the most renowned and frequently mentioned institutions, or be applied through Time’s open call to action.

The ranking is structured around three key pillars: academic capacity and performance, innovation and economic impact, and global engagement. Universities receive scores for each pillar, which are then aggregated into a final score to produce the ranking.

Time ranked 500 universities around the world, and only two Canadian schools made the top 50.

The highest ranking Canadian institution at 24th place is the University of Toronto, which received a total score of 75.78. It scored particularly high for innovation and economic impact (80.64).

The University of British Columbia (UBC) followed behind in the 33rd spot. Its total score came out to 71.56, also scoring high for innovation and economic impact (85.36).

University of Oxford in the United Kingdom took the top spot, with a total score of 90.20, with Yale University taking second place (88.55) and Stanford University grabbing the third spot (88.30).

Although only two Canadian universities cracked the top 50, there are 25 altogether on the ranking. The University of Alberta and Calgary made the top 100, while McGill University placed uncharacteristically low in the ranking at 154th place. It usually rivals UofT and UBC for the top spots on these lists.
