A Canadian MLA went viral for the wrong reasons, and it was all because of his use of AI for a speech that was recorded, widely shared, and ridiculed.
The video was of New Brunswick MLA Bill Oliver, who forgot to remove an AI prompt from his speech.
It has since been shared all over social media, including Reddit, which is what sparked the mass-shared clip.
Oliver’s speech starts off normally.
While we can’t see the whole speech in the videos we’ve spotted, Oliver is heard mid-sentence saying, “That exceed the powers actually granted to those offices.”
Then, he reads the AI prompt.
“Here’s a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points.”
The video was shared around North America among various subreddits, but it started on the NewBrunswickCanada page.

Oliver has not yet issued a public statement, but there are thousands of reactions from people around the web.
“Top tier muppetry,” someone said.
Others were a lot angrier in their condemnation.
“We hold high schoolers to a higher standard regarding AI. He can’t even fathom the effort and decency to write his own speech, and we give them the legislative power of our province. F**k that,” the Redditor said, adding, “Get this fossil out of there.”
In response to him not making a public statement yet, someone said, “He’s waiting for an AI prompt to tell him what to say.”

We’ve contacted Oliver’s office in hopes of a statement, and will update this story when we hear back.
