Canada captures stories and historical moments in its coins, and this time, Halloween has come early for coin collectors who love a creepy design.
Just in time for the spooky season in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a brand-new coin that’s hauntingly detailed: Haunted Canada: Lady in White, the latest addition to the Unexplained Phenomena series of silver rectangular coins. Previous designs include the Duncan Incident and the Langenburg Event.
This time, the focus is on Québec’s Montmorency Falls, a picturesque waterfall and popular tourist attraction located in the Québec City area. The falls can be viewed from cable cars or a suspension bridge. But take a closer look and you might see more than just the rushing waters.
A haunting love story

According to the Mint, if you look closer, you might catch a glimpse of someone in the mist of the falls: Mathilde Robin.
As the story goes, Robin was a bride-to-be who discovered that her beloved had been killed nearby in the Battle of Beauport in 1759, along with 60 French soldiers who perished while fighting British forces. Grief-stricken, Robin plunged into the waters of Montmorency Falls and her body was never found. But the story doesn’t end there.
To this day, it’s alleged that many can still hear her cries or see her ghost leap from the top of the falls. She has since earned the nickname the Lady in White.
A glowing ghostly presence

Haunted Canada: Lady in White stands out in that there’s more to the coin than meets the eye.
Turn off the lights and look closer with a black light flashlight, and you’ll see a glowing image of Robin in the mist. Canadian artist Pandora Young, who designed the coin, said that she researched historically accurate costuming and studied the falls from different angles, comparing the mist to an inkblot test.
“Here, the imagination could glimpse the unexpected — a rabbit, a swan, or perhaps a ghostly mademoiselle,” she said. “If Mathilde’s spirit resides in these falls, she could certainly be in those mists!”
If you’re hoping to add this design to your collection, the coin, which has a face value of $20, currently retails for $154.95. It appears that it’s expected to be a popular one, as 6,500 of these coins are available.
The coin is presented in a black clamshell with a black beauty box and comes with a black light flashlight. With its eerie glow and its place in Canada’s history, the Lady in White is a must-have for fans of the supernatural and creepy collectibles.
