California is offering Canadians a 25% discount at over 1,000 hotels

California is doubling efforts to woo Canadian tourists back to the Golden State with a new campaign and discounts on California hotels.
In April, California Governor Gavin Newsom shared a video on social media inviting Canadians to visit, stating that they’re launching a tourism campaign.
“Sure, you-know-who’s trying to stir things up in D.C.,” he said. “But don’t let that ruin your beach plans. California, it’s the ultimate playground — 2,000 miles from Washington and a world away in mindset.”
California continues to ramp up marketing efforts by partnering with Expedia to entice more Canadians to choose the state for their next vacation.
Still California dreaming? You’ll be eligible for a 25 per cent discount at select hotels simply for being Canadian. Options range from centrally located hotels in the city to resorts for those looking for a little R&R.

“The campaign rollout includes a new video from Visit California highlighting how important Canadians are to California and the debut of a partnership with Expedia that provides discounts of up to 25 per cent on over 1,000 California hotels, activities, and attractions through a landing page made for Canadians,” states the release.
To book a discounted hotel room, visit Expedia’s California loves Canadians page. It offers a variety of hotels in different locations and price points.
While prices are subject to change, some featured hotels include Montrose at Beverly Hills ($559, discounted to $447), Timbri Hotel San Francisco ($327, discounted to $278), and Hotel Per La ($547, discounted to $465).
The state further expresses its appreciation for its northern neighbour in a 30-second video with the message: “California wouldn’t be California without Canada.”
The video is a tribute to Canadian-owned businesses and Canadians’ contributions to the state, from architecture to hospitality.
“Without you, we wouldn’t be as beautiful, and we wouldn’t be as full-bodied or delicious. Without you, our coastline wouldn’t be as iconic,” states the voiceover in the video. “And our movies wouldn’t be larger than life. Truth is, California just wouldn’t be California without Canada. Thank you, Canada.”
Canadian tourism certainly matters to California.
In 2024, 1.8 million Canadians visited the state and spent US$3.72 billion (C$5.13 billion). Almost 1.2 million California workers rely on jobs in tourism and hospitality.
According to a March report from OAG, a global travel data company, forward airline bookings between Canada and the U.S. dropped 75.7 per cent in April, while June was the lowest at 71.6 per cent.
And while the U.S. is ordinarily a popular destination, Skyscanner’s recent report reveals that disgruntled Canadian travellers are exploring other international destinations or choosing to travel domestically.
