Alberta lags drastically in Canadian pride compared to other provinces

Canadian pride has surged for most provinces in the face of U.S. tariff impacts and 51st state comments from President Donald Trump; however, that’s not the case for Alberta.

A March 2025 survey by Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies said due to actions by the U.S., pride in being Canadian has “likely reached a new height across the country.”

The survey found that over the past 12 months pride in being Canadian has jumped from 80 per cent to 86 per cent and with few exceptions has transcended all regions and demographics.

One of the few exceptions was Alberta, which actually saw a decrease in pride being Canadian from 84 per cent in November 2024 to 74 per cent earlier this month. Only Atlantic Canada recorded a drop as well, from 91 per cent to 89 per cent.

British Columbia led the country for pride in being Canadian, jumping from 70 per cent last November to 90 per cent earlier this month.

In addition to the lower amount of pride to be Canadian compared to other provinces, Alberta leads Canada in opposition for retaliatory tariffs in a U.S. trade war in a recent poll, and another survey showed that travellers in the province are leading Canada in the choice to travel south this year regardless.

The survey was conducted by Leger for the Association for Canadian Studies with 1548
respondents in Canada over the period March 1 and 2, 2025. A margin of error cannot be associated with a non-probability sample in a panel survey for comparison purposes.A probability sample of 1539 respondents would have a margin of error of 2.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
