A U.S.-led tariff war may wreck some sectors in Alberta, but a new survey shows residents in the province are the least likely to support retaliatory tariffs in a trade war.

Results from Leger show that when Canadians were asked the question if they were in favour or opposed to the Canadian government responding dollar for dollar to any tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian imports, Alberta landed in the top amount of total opposed respondents, with 21 per cent.

Manitoba/Saskatchewan came in second with 19 per cent, while Atlantic Canada landed in third with 17 per cent being opposed.

The provinces with the most residents supporting the federal government responding dollar for dollar tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian imports was Quebec with 78 per cent, followed by Ontario and British Columbia, at 75 per cent and 74 per cent, respectively.

Eight out of 10 Canadians also said they believe consumer prices have increased in the past few weeks.

A third (34 per cent) of Americans are in favour of Trump’s administration imposing tariffs on products imported from Canada, a three-point increase since last week. Half (52 per cent) think it will negatively impact the U.S. economy. One-third of Americans (35 per cent) are in favour of imposing tariffs on Mexico.

Canadians also have mixed views on the U.S.: 29 per cent see it as an enemy, 32 per cent as an ally, and another 24 per cent as a neutral nation.

A U.S.-led tariff war may hurt Alberta badly, but another survey showed that travellers in the province are leading Canada in the choice to travel south this year regardless.

This web survey on the economy was conducted from March 7 to 10, 2025, with 1,548 Canadians and 1,010 U.S. residents, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.
