The concept to the store is simple – it’s a shop for Calgarians to find quality home and body products sans the packaging and waste. Customers will be encouraged to bring their own containers to refill their cleaners, soaps, and personal care products, hence the name “refillery.”

Founders Lisa Watts and Tara Meyer both have backgrounds in the environmental non-profit sector and health and wellness, and together they are extremely passionate about making package-free products more accessible to the general population.

They have been working with suppliers and designers from across Canada to source products that are designed to last with the end of life in mind.

“We’ve all heard the troubling statistics of how much trash is ending up in our oceans and ecosystems, and it can feel a bit paralyzing to know how to help,” said Meyer.

“We believe that it should be easy to shop sustainably, so that’s where Canary comes in. We want to make living a low impact lifestyle enjoyable and convenient for everybody.”

Canary’s offerings will include package-free products for the whole family — including little ones and pets — along with lifestyle goods such as reusable produce bags, stainless steel straws, bamboo toothbrushes, cleaning tools, and gifts.

Essentially, their goal is to provide consumers with a meaningful way to reduce their use of single-use plastics, which will ultimately help minimize the items being sent to our landfills.

“It’s not about living a perfectly zero-waste lifestyle, it’s about making simple changes where we can to reduce the waste we create in our regular daily routines,” said Watts.

“We could not be more excited to open our doors and show the Calgary community how easy it is to shop smart and efficiently, with our beautiful environment in mind.”
