Calgary’s annual Yogathon is promising to get your inner fire burning this August in a sun salutation challenge with a difference.
On August 20, Calgary will join more than 50 cities worldwide in a mass Yogathon to raise funds for Care for Children, which helps provide education for children in rural India.
Participants will try to do 108 sun salutations, or surya namaskar, as a symbolic offering of hope to children around the world and spread the message of universal education.
The number 108 carries spiritual significance in many cultures and it has become a tradition for yoga practitioners to perform 108 sun salutations in large groups.
In Calgary, the Yogathon will be led by trainer Bhavesh Tolani, a yoga teacher at the Art of Living Foundation for 16 years.
Registration for this year’s Yogathon costs $25 at yogathon.org. It is recommended to bring your own yoga mat and arrive 30 minutes before the session starts.
