A massive Wolf Moon will light up the sky on the first night of 2018
A special lunar display will help welcome 2018 when a Supermoon also known as the “Wolf Moon” lights up the night sky on January 1.
For those unfamiliar with the term, the first Full Moon of the year is named after howling wolves.
But beyond the fullness of the moon, those who cast their eyes towards the sky the moon will appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter than typical full moons (weather permitting of course.)
The perceived increase in size comes from the fact that the moon will be at essentially its closes point to the earth during its orbit.
At its closest point on January 1, the moon will be 356,565 kilometers from Earth. On average, the moon is about 382,900 km from Earth.
According to The Old Farmers Almanac, the moon will be its biggest and brightest at 9:24 pm, EST.
It seems the beginning of 2018 is looking very bright, indeed.
