When will Alphonso Davies return for Canada at FIFA World Cup?

Alphonso Davies has yet to make an appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and it remains to be seen when or if Canada’s captain will see the pitch.

Davies injured his left hamstring during a Champions League semi-final match with Bayern Munich on May 6. The recovery timeline was expected to be 4-6 weeks. But more than five and a half weeks later, his status is still uncertain.

The 25-year-old continues to work his way back from injury ahead of Thursday’s match against Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver.

Canada coy about Davies’ status

It appears that gamesmanship has begun, with a clear intent to muddle Qatar’s preparation.

Canada Soccer would not fully disclose an update on Davies’ recovery status on Tuesday.

What we do know is that this was the first day where Davies was able to switch from working out in running shoes to proper football boots, as he participated in warmup drills with teammates. He appeared to move with ease.

It’s unclear if Davies was able to fully train or if he remains in the return to play stage of his recovery, as reporters were only permitted to view the first 15 minutes of training.

So will we see Davies Thursday at BC Place?

On paper, Canada should beat Qatar. But matches aren’t played on paper. Just ask Switzerland.

If Davies is able to play 15 to 20 minutes off the bench, he would undoubtedly provide a huge boost. But Canada could also choose to play it safe and save him for next week’s match against Switzerland.

“Obviously everybody knows that Phonzie is up there as one of the best players of the team,” Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio told reporters following training. “He can play as a left back or as a winger. You guys know he’s the best dribbler of the tournament. If he plays everything starts to open up a little bit more. At the same time if he’s not available, he has to be one hundred per cent so he can help us and hopefully he can get that as quick as possible.”

Lineup shuffle if Davies can play

A return to the pitch would shuffle the left side of Marsch’s 4-4-2 formation.

Davies can play left back, as he does with Bayern Munich, in place of Richie Laryea. He could also play as a midfielder on the left wing, which is a spot that was occupied by Liam Miller and Ali Ahmed in Friday’s match.

“Look if we get Phonzie back that’s obviously ideal,” said Canadian defender Alistair Johnston. “You want as many of your world class players you can possibly have on the pitch. I know hamstrings, they’re ones where you can’t take shortcuts with. His health is most important to us.”

Moral support

Davies was Canada’s biggest cheerleader in their match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and spoke to his teammates prior in the dressing room.

“I think it’s very important for him to be here,” Eustáquio said. “You guys saw the speech he gave before the game. He’s very important for us. When other teams see that he’s injured for the game, I think it’s kind of a relief for them. He’s been working very hard and hopefully he can get back as quick as he can.”
