USA beats Canada in yet another gold medal hockey game

This is not Canada’s year in international hockey.

After suffering defeats to the USA in both the men’s and women’s Olympic tournaments, that same fate has followed in the Paralympics. Team Canada’s para-ice hockey squad fell to the Americans in the gold medal game on Sunday by a score of 6-2.

Once again, the Canadians will have to settle for silver on the international stage, while their arch-rivals celebrate atop the podium. It was a second-period goal from the USA’s Jack Wallace that wound up being the winner.

Liam Hickey got both of Canada’s goals in the disappointing loss. The 27-year-old from St. Johns, Newfoundland, was playing in his third Paralympic Games. Hickey’s first goal tied the game at 1-1, while his second was a last-ditch effort at a comeback, making it 4-2.

Canada just couldn’t find a way to pull off the comeback.

This is the third-straight Paralympic Games that Canada has finished as the runner-up to the USA in para-ice hockey. The last time the Canadians captured gold in the sport came in Turin 2006.

The Americans have dominated the sport, winning the last five Paralympic gold medals.

As for the bronze medal, it was China rounding out the podium for the second-straight Paralympics. This was the exact same podium as the 2022 Paralympics.
