The Olympics are over but there's more curling drama in Italy

Who knew the sport of curling was so scandalous?

After an exciting Olympic tournament that saw the gold medal-winning Canadian men’s curling team go viral for swearing at their Swedish opponents, curling drama in Italy isn’t finished just yet.

This time, it involves the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics.

Before the first competitive stone was thrown in the tournament, a new scandal involving the theft of two curling rocks had already erupted. The CBC’s Devin Heroux said two stones were stolen right out of the Cortina Curling Olympic stadium.

Luckily, it does appear that replacement rocks have already been secured, and the theft will not interfere with the competition. According to Heroux, the stolen rocks are owned by World Curling, and the authorities have been conducting an investigation into the theft.

If it isn’t the athletes swearing at each other, it’s a thief stealing the stones.

Paralympians compete in wheelchair curling. Instead of launching down the sheet and throwing the rock, an athlete in a stationary wheelchair must throw the rock either with their own hand or a cue, with no sweeping involved.

First introduced as a Paralympic medal event at Torino 2006, wheelchair curling involves mixed teams of five, where one female athlete must be on the ice at all times. A mixed doubles wheelchair curling event is making its debut at the 2026 Games.

Canada will be looking for its sixth-straight medal in the event, and its first gold medal since Sochi 2014.

Hopefully, they will be able to do so without any further drama hitting the sport.
