“UCalgary research improves the world around us. It creates jobs, powers new economic sectors, and it makes Albertans healthier – even saving lives. In just 59 years, the University of Calgary has become a research and innovation powerhouse, competing with institutions that have been around for much longer,” said Dr. Ed McCauley, president and vice-chancellor of the university, in a release.
U of C previously made the top five in 2021, before being bumped down. It is the youngest university to make the top five this year.
The University of Toronto took the number one spot, without seeing a change in ranking from last year. It managed to bring in over $1.5 billion in external research funding, a 10.8 per cent increase from last year.

“This top-five ranking was achieved thanks to the brilliance and dedication of our research community. Our sponsored research income is more than just a dollar amount – it’s breakthrough discoveries, life-saving innovations, and solutions to the most pressing problems facing the communities we serve,” said Dr. William Ghali, vice-president of research at U of C.
