"Cancel your trip": Trudeau warns Canadians looking to travel

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reminded Canadians once again that it is absolutely critical to stay home this winter and not travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s not the time to be travelling abroad. If you had planned to leave the country, please, on behalf of all Canadians, cancel your trip. It’s not worth catching COVID-19 and bringing it back to Canada for a trip down south or elsewhere.”

Trudeau also warned that there could be additional travel measures put in place ahead of March break.

In a press conference Tuesday, Trudeau was asked about tightening restrictions during the popular travel period.

“We have a constitution that guarantees the freedom to move and return for Canadians, but at the same time, the measures we’ve put in place are not to just discourage travel … these are measures that assure the protection of Canadians,” stated Trudeau.

He added that currently, the federal government is in talks with the premiers of other provinces to “see how and if we need to take additional measures in terms of the upcoming March break,” specifically targeting those who are looking to escape down south for warmer temperatures.

Earlier this month, the federal government implemented stricter travel measures, and all air travellers bound for Canada will be required to present a pre-departure negative COVID-19 test in order to fly.
