The Mitch Marner era is officially over in Toronto.
Marner has been traded by the Maple Leafs to the Vegas Golden Knights on the eve of free agency, according to multiple reports.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that it was a sign-and-trade deal, as the 28-year-old Markham native inked an eight-year contract worth $12 million per season before being traded.
The Leafs will receive centre Nicolas Roy in return, per TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Marner was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He leaves Toronto after nine years playing for the Leafs.
Reports of Leafs GM Brad Treliving talking to the Golden Knights about a trade first surfaced over the weekend.
Marner ranks fifth all-time in points (741) in Maple Leafs franchise history, behind Borje Salming (768), Dave Keon (858), Darryl Sittler (916), and Mats Sundin (987). He also ranks fifth all-time in playoff points (63), behind Sittler (65), Keon (67), Sundin (70), and Doug Gilmour (77).
Despite his success, Marner was heavily criticized for Toronto’s lack of playoff success. The team won just two playoff series during his tenure and never advanced past the second round.
While Marner scored 13 points in 13 playoff games this spring, he only notched two goals. That led to him being booed by Leafs fans in Toronto during the team’s Game 7 loss against Florida.
In Roy, the Leafs receive a 6-foot-4 centre that scored 31 points in 71 games for the Golden Knights last season. The 28-year-old is a third-line centre that averaged 15:13 of ice time last season, including time on the power play (1:11) and penalty kill (0:47).
With Marner leaving, the Leafs are expected to be active when free agency opens July 1. Toronto was expected to make a push for Brad Marchand, but that’s not going to happen.
Minutes after news of the Marner trade broke, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Marchand re-signed with the Florida Panthers. The longtime Leafs nemesis inked a six-year, $32-million contract to stay in South Florida.
The list of available unrestricted free agents is slim. Mikael Granlund is now the highest-scoring pending UFA, following a 66-point season. Other pending UFAs include Nikolaj Ehlers (63 points), Patrick Kane (59), Brock Boeser (50), Pius Suter (46), Evgenii Dadonov (40), and Matt Grzelcyk (40).
