Maple Leafs and Golden Knights talking trade with Mitch Marner

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Mitch Marner may wind up parting ways before free agency even gets underway next Tuesday.
It’s been quite apparent for some time that Marner would be wearing a new uniform by the time the 2025-26 season rolls around, as he and the Maple Leafs were more than ready for a split following several playoff failures. Several teams were interested in landing the 28-year-old, but it sounds as though the Vegas Golden Knights may come out on top.
As per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs and Golden Knights are discussing a sign-and-trade involving Marner. Doing so would also allow for the Golden Knights to sign him to an eight-year contract.
Friedman also mentioned that if the trade is to happen, it’s expected that forward Nic Roy woud be headed the other way.
Something to keep an eye: on-and-off this week, Toronto and Vegas have been discussing the possibility of a sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner
Likelihood of it happening: hard to say. But talks have occurred and continue to do so.

I believe Nic Roy will be going to Toronto if this gets done https://t.co/lWRgGg60jn

While losing Marner stings, the Leafs being able to pick up Roy would help, as it appeared their star winger was going to be gone for nothing at all in return. While not nearly the same caliber of player, Roy has proven to be a solid bottom-six forward for the Golden Knights. In 71 games this past season, he scored 15 goals and 31 points. He also chipped in with two goals and four points in 11 playoff outings.
As for Marner, should this trade go through, he will join a Golden Knights team that is just two years removed from winning the Stanley Cup. They are in a very good position to compete once again next season with players including Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, Alex Pietrangelo, and Shea Theodore all under contract.
