Tornado watch in effect for Calgary

Aug 7 2016, 10:16 am

Environment Canada released a weather alert this evening saying severe thunderstorms in the Calgary area could produce tornadoes.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect for Calgary, with strong wind gusts expected and up to ping pong ball size hail and heavy rain in some areas.

Some of the thunderstorms developing over southern Alberta have shown signs of rotation which may form tornadoes that could be dangerous and potentially life-threatening

Safety precautions from Environment Canada are to go indoors or in a room on the lowest floor away from outside walls and windows. A basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet are best. Do not stay in mobile homes, cars, tents, trailers or any other temporary or free-standing shelter.
