An Alberta physician has died of COVID-19, marking the province’s third healthcare worker death due to the virus.

The doctor was included in the 25 new deaths the province announced Wednesday. Health Minister Tyler Shandro offered his condolences to the physician and their family in a statement released Thursday.

“While this virus was not contracted at work, we know physicians are on the front lines every day, working hard to battle the physical and emotional toll of this pandemic,” Shandro said.

“Their expert care, deep compassion and tireless leadership is one of the finest examples of public service. This loss will be felt by all Albertans.”

Joe Corral of Calgary, who died on December 28, was Alberta’s first health worker to be killed by the virus. An unidentified woman in her 50s from Edmonton was the second healthcare worker who died of her infection. She passed away earlier this week.
