Taber corn is a staple in Alberta and, really, all across Canada.
Because of Southern Alberta’s hot and dry climate, the corn fields thrive there. Although this year’s “unseasonably hot” weather has taken a toll, with fires, tornadoes, storms, and heat warnings, it does come with some good news.
Corn is available incredibly early this year!
Sales typically don’t start until August or later, but this year, it’s mid-July. You’ve probably already seen it being sold if you’ve been to the store recently.
There are currently more than 50 corn stands across Alberta right now, and Calgary’s Crossroads Market is one that’s taking advantage. Starting today (July 21), there will be tables and tables of the sweet summer favourite.

“We are so corny for the arrival of the ear-resistible TABER CORN,” the market posted on Instagram. “Stalk up on fresh Taber Corn this weekend at our market!”
This small town is known as the Corn Capital of Canada, with a product so famous that growers in the area actually have certificates of authenticity to prove that the cobs were grown in the Taber region.
Johnson Taber Corn & Potatoes, a family farm located in the heart of the MD of Taber, is already rejoicing in the massive corn crop ready to ship out to stands, markets, stores, and more.
