Visitors could see higher parking fees at a popular Alberta lake town

Sylvan Lake visitors may soon see higher parking fees and a longer pay-parking season go into effect this year.
At the Town of Sylvan Lake’s regular council meeting on March 10, 2026, officials outlined a proposed 2026 Visitor Paid Parking Program.
The new program would increase daily lot fees from $30 to $50, raise on-street parking fees from $3 to $5 per hour, and boost seasonal permits from $126.50 to $150.
In addition, the paid parking season would be extended, running from May 15 to Oct. 31, 2026, an extension from last year’s end date of Sept. 15.Â
Council is also considering expanding pay parking areas around the lakefront and downtown core, with four new areas proposed, and exploring the potential for a year-round program in future years.

The Visitor Paid Parking program began in 2017 and was created to reduce the tax burden on residents by generating revenue from visitors. Funds collected have typically supported downtown upkeep, maintenance, and enhanced enforcement, with a reserve set aside for lakefront initiatives.Â
According to the council report, the town has renewed its service agreement with Hot Spot Parking, a company that manages and enforces pay parking programs, which is expected to generate significantly higher revenue this year.Â
Council is also recommending an update to the town’s Reserve Policy to allow the fund to not only be used for lakefront projects but also for parking program costs and tourism incentives connected to the lakefront.

Sylvan Lake isn’t the only spot in Alberta looking to increase parking fees. Banff National Park recently announced a fee increase at a popular parking lot.
