Beloved Olympic Plaza art is finding a new home at a Calgary park

Munro Park, located in northeast Calgary, is set to go under construction this spring, bringing upgrades and Olympic Plaza art to its grounds.
The park already includes many well-loved features, like the walking loop, mature trees, an open playfield, and fitness equipment, which will not be affected by the upgrades.
New elements coming to the park include a nature kids’ play zone, a community plaza with space to gather, green infrastructure like bioretention (rain) gardens, a naturalized garden perimeter, many new trees, a new irrigation system, a three-on-three basketball court, additional seating, bike racks, and a water fountain.
If you’ve missed some of the art installations that previously graced Olympic Plaza, some beloved pieces are moving to a new location at Munro Park.
The beloved Richardson ground squirrel sculptures are finding new life at Munro Park after previously residing on the Olympic Park brick wall.

The Centennial Grove art installation, created in 2010 by Garth Balls and Yogi Navagrah of IBI Group, will also find a new home at the west side plaza in the park.
The park will also be taking part in “Urban Rewilding,” which is moving the park away from manicured lawns. At Munro Park, you’ll be able to find natural native prairie rough fescue grasslands, pollinator gardens, and aspen groves.
The natural landscape will attract birds, butterflies, and other wildlife while improving air quality and biodiversity.
According to the City of Calgary, the park might take a while to complete. “Munro Park will be closed for construction for about 12 months, with reopening expected in Fall 2026. Timelines may change due to inclement weather, complexity, supply chain, and/or other unexpected circumstances.”
