This Alberta ski resort was just named one of the best in western North America
Banff’s Sunshine Village has just been recognized as the second-best ski resort in western North America.
Ski Magazine recently released its Top 30 Resorts in the West for 2026, and Sunshine Village claimed the runner-up spot and was the top Canadian destination.
The rankings are based on a survey completed each spring by Ski Magazine readers, who rate each resort across 18 criteria, with each resort earning a score between one and 10 in each category.
Sunshine Village was praised as “An exciting high-alpine ski experience with reliable snow, diverse terrain, and breathtaking views just minutes from the town of Banff,” according to the magazine.
The publication also highlighted the unique journey to the village.
“We know it’s a cliché, but getting there really is part of the fun: skiers park or hop a shuttle to the base area, then ride the eight-passenger gondola up through the mountainside to the base village.”

Another standout feature of the resort is its lifts. Readers specifically noted the speed and efficiency of Sunshine Village’s lifts.
“Readers lauded Banff Sunshine’s fast lifts that have been continuously upgraded over the last several years, including two with new bubble enclosures to protect from the wind at this largely above-treeline resort, a much-appreciated creature comfort.”
Sunshine Village’s appeal doesn’t stop at the slopes. Beyond the trails and lifts, the town of Banff offers plenty for visitors to do and enjoy.
“Banff is a lively, picturesque ski town with dozens of hotels at many price points, and even more dining and evening diversions, from bowling to escape rooms. It all rolls up to a dynamic ski vacation that delivers on many different fronts,” says the magazine.
Only four Canadian destinations made the list: B.C’s Revelstoke Mountain Resort in 28th place, Lake Louise in 15th place, and Whistler Blackcomb in B.C. in the number 10 spot.
Sunshine Village was also the first Canadian ski resort to open for the 25/26 season, and was recently named one of the best ski hills for beginners.
