'Times are tough': Downtown Calgary shop closing its doors after five years

Jun 11 2026, 6:24 pm

A Calgary plant shop that has been open for five years recently announced it will be closing its doors this summer.

Sunday Shop, located in Victoria Park, is set to close on Canada Day, according to an Instagram post from the business.

“With a very heavy (but extremely grateful) heart, I have to announce that as of July 1, Sunday Shop will no longer be in operation,” the post read.

The post said the decision comes amid “tough and uncertain times,” adding that it was not an easy one to make but “the most responsible decision” at the time.

The tropical plant store originally opened in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a passion project and recently celebrated its fifth birthday on June 6, marking half a decade in operation.

While the Calgary shop is closing, it offered some good news, announcing it’s spending its final month as a celebration of its five-year run in Victoria Park. Since June 5, the store has launched a “so long sale,” offering 20 per cent off most items in the store, giving customers a final chance to browse and shop the spaces.

“I sincerely feel that this store has accomplished too many things to be bummed about this, and this sale/month is purely about celebrating those things, it would be unfair not to!”

Sunday Shop is joining a growing list of Calgary businesses that have closed recently, and if you’re wondering which other spots have called it quits, we’ve rounded up nine that have recently closed or are closing soon.
