It’s here, the big VD (no, not venereal disease…that’s a whole other article!) Valentine’s Day; a day some single people dread – and by dread we mean their night consists of binging on chocolate, hiding under the covers, watching rom coms until their eyes are crossed, or drunk texting their ex; a highly regrettable decision when looking at your phone the next morning (we’ve all been there, right?).

On the flip side, perhaps it’s a day you look forward to! Is being single a bad thing? Is it a curse? Perhaps Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate single-dom, to celebrate you, to celebrate being independent and strong.

Let’s go over some of the pros and cons to being single on Valentine’s Day. We’ll get the hard part over with and talk about the cons first.

Cons

  • You wake up the morning of Valentine’s Day, and stare across the barren wasteland of pillows and sheets next to you. It’s just another day, yet somehow you can’t help but wish you had someone to spend it with, someone to bring you flowers, or someone to have dinner with.
  • You have nobody to bring you breakfast in bed; no one to wake you with a kiss, and no one to surprise you with a gift.
  • You jump in the shower, but realize you have no one to shave your legs or bikini line for, so you just continue to let them grow out of control… your winter fur coat!
  • You don’t have a romantic dinner to look forward to; so you have to make plans of your own, yet your girlfriends are all going out with their significant others.
  • You head to work, or out to run errands, and there’s a sea of pink and red everywhere. There are gifts, chocolates, and flowers, all reminders of how single you are.

  • You see strangers at the store, eager to find that last minute gift, or a bright bouquet of flowers for their loved one. All of the restaurant parking lots are full; a sign that the romantic dinners are underway.
  • Your parents probably send you a message or call to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day. Maybe your mom says: “Don’t worry sweetie, you’ll meet someone when you least expect it,” a line you’ve heard a thousand times before.
  • You head home at the end of the day, to an empty house. There are no flowers on the table, no little-wrapped box on your bed, and no bottle of wine chilling in the fridge (ok let’s be real, we’re sure you had a bottle stashed away in there for a lonely night). The TV guide is full of rom coms and sappy movies; I mean, who needs to see The Notebook 20 times?!
  • You crawl into bed at the end of the night; horny and alone, the image of Ryan Gosling in the rain still fresh in your mind. You drift off to sleep, wishing you were in someone’s arms, yet it’s just another lonely night in bed.

Ok, wow that was depressing!

Is being single on Valentine’s Day really all that bad? We don’t think so! We think it’s AMAZING and TBH, it was a whole lot easier and WAY more fun to write the pros list.

So here it is — a list of pros to being single on Valentine’s Day:

Pros

  • You don’t have to stress out about making reservations for dinner, at a place that is totally overpriced.
  • You can treat yourself to an entire bottle of wine – expensive wine – and it will still be cheaper than what you’d pay for one glass in a restaurant.
  • You can sleep in, since you don’t have to get up to make anyone breakfast.
  • You can pee with the door open, and fart all you want, with nobody judging you or walking into the bathroom unexpectedly. Actually, you can do this every day. Isn’t single life fun?
  • You don’t have to do your hair, like all day, if you don’t want. You also don’t have to wear makeup – unless of course you want to, and why not? Put on your heels, slap on that Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadow, and do something for yourself. It’s all about choices baby!
  • Get a pedicure, a manicure, or both! You won’t have someone telling you that you’re spending too much, or that you don’t need it.
  • You can order in dinner, and eat whatever you want, without having to be self-conscious about bad garlic breath, or that extra side of bread you had, in addition to the double chocolate, fudge cake with extra whipped cream that you got for dessert. Put your stretchy pants on and live your best life!

  • You can watch whatever you want to – with nobody nagging you about your reality TV choices, or groaning that ‘Game of Thrones’ is too gory, or complaining that ‘This is Us’ is too sad. It’s your TV, your remote, and your choice.
  • You can go to bed whenever you want, and you can sprawl out to each corner of the bed if you want. Oh what? You want to lay with your feet on your pillows and your head at the end of the bed? You do you, hun-nay!
  • You can sleep in your most comfy, granny jammies, or that tank top where you wake up with one boob out, and not worry that you weren’t a perfect pretty princess (or prince) when you were sleeping.

Alright, with all of the pros and cons listed before you, we want to tell you that being single can be amazing. It’s a time in your life where you can take care of you and no marketing ploy of a holiday (which is really just meant to get people spending money after the post-holiday season drought) should make you feel bad about it.

Although we love a day that celebrates all sorts of love (self-love included), we firmly believe that when you’re in love with that special someone, every day should be like Valentine’s Day!

So single people, treat yourself to something, blow some cash on yourself, and end the day being thankful that you’re strong and independent, and when the right person comes along, you’ll know you’re one hell of a catch!
