Run in The Secret 3K for International Women’s Day next month

As recommended by health officials, if you choose to participate in events outside of your home, please adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including proper physical distancing, mask-wearing, and frequent handwashing. If you are sick, please stay home.

Believe it or not, there are still places in the world where women are not allowed to run or walk outside.

The Secret 3K is helping to support the right for all people to run free, while celebrating gender equality and safe and inclusive spaces during the week of International Women’s Day.

The Secret 3K was inspired by the award-winning documentary The Secret Marathon. The film tells the story of Zainab, the first woman in Afghanistan to participate in a marathon, and how she motivated Alberta’s own Martin Parnell to vow to run in the Marathon of Afghanistan the following year in support.

To avoid making the marathon a target for terrorist attack, Parnell and filmmaker Kate McKenzie had to train and travel to Afghanistan in secret, where they uncovered the amazing people who stand for change.

“While filming a documentary in Afghanistan, I was inspired by such brave women and girls who fought for equality and at times, risked their lives for the freedom to run outdoors,” shares McKenzie.

“When I returned to Canada, I was struck by the stories of so many women who told me they didn’t feel safe to walk or run at night right here in Canada. The Secret 3K was launched to reclaim safe public spaces and champion gender equality here at home.”

This year’s event is 100% virtual and, as long as they complete the run on March 3, participants can choose a time and a route that allows them to remain safe.

In 2020, Calgary’s The Secret 3K hosted 478 participants, doubling the amount from 2019. This will be the fourth year that The Secret 3K offers a virtual option, which has previously allowed individuals to complete the marathon from 23 different countries.

Register today and receive downloadable race bibs, a training program, and a finisher’s certificate. The race will also provide interactive opportunities for runners through a Facebook Live event and a customized soundtrack to listen to while completing the 3K.

Money raised will provide women and girls with the chance to participate in the Marathon of Afghanistan.

The Secret 3K invites everyone to come together in solidarity (virtually) for International Women’s Day, get some fresh air, and support the right that all humans should have to walk or run in their community, free of fear.
