Robin Hood flour recalled due to E. coli risk

Heads up home bakers: If you’ve got a bag of good ol’ basic Robin Hood All Purpose flour in your pantry, it might need to be tossed.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency posted a recall warning on March 28 for some 10kg bags of Robin Hood AP flour sold in Alberta, BC, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Smucker Foods of Canada Corp. has issued the recall for their product :due to possible E. coli O121 contamination.”The recall was triggered as part of a food safety investigation; one person has reported illness as a result of consuming this flour.

The CFIA warns that customers should not consume Robin Hood All Purpose flour with Lot codes containing BB/MA 2018 AL 17 and 6 291 548, and the UPC 0 59000 01652 8. If that’s your bag, you can either chuck it in the garbage or take it back to the store where it was purchased. In any case, don’t use it for your next batch of pancakes or muffins.

The CFIA breaks down the risk:

Food contaminated with E. coli O121 may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea. In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
