Police arrest man after Calgary Transit bus stolen, taken on joy ride

The Calgary Police Service has one man in custody after a joyride resulted in multiple vehicles being damaged.

According to a release from CPS, a thief stole a Calgary Transit bus just before 6 pm on Monday, May 18.

The bus was unoccupied and was sitting at the Lyons Park LRT station when the alleged theft occurred, and police believe that the man then drove the bus through the communities of Briar Hill, Capitol Hill, along 16th Avenue between 10th Street and 29th Street NW, near Foothills Hospital, along Parkdale Boulevard, onto 4th Street and Edmonton Trail, and then finally stopping near Memorial Drive, the release states.

Multiple vehicles were struck during the journey, but no injuries were reported.

A man in his 30s was arrested at around 6:15 pm, though not before leading CPS’ canine unit on a short foot pursuit.

Charges in relation to the incident are currently pending.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has discovered property damage as a result, to contact the Calgary Police Service’s non-emergency number of 403-266-1234.
