If you’ve ever wanted the ability to rate people, like doctors or professors, Calgary-developed app Peeple is here to let you do just that.
Starting today, the app will let users rate others in three areas: personal, professional, and romantic.
When the app was first introduced in September, it was criticized for its ability to negatively rate people who didn’t use the app. Now, the app makers have added an opt-in service where reviews are only posted with consent of person being reviewed.
Things to know
- You can’t rate people who aren’t on the app
- People can’t add you to the app
- What people say about about you can’t go on your profile without your permission
Peeple is currently available to iOS users in North America only.

Even with the changes, many are outraged and have taken to social media to voice their concern and opinion:
The incredibly ill advised #peeple app launches today. I wish them nothing but bad luck.

@brosandprose #Peeple needs to realize this was an idea that only sounds good in their heads, in rl it’s nothing but a weapon for bullies+

Holding politicians to account is one thing. They are public servants who seek fame. Rating private citizens via #peeple is bullying

#Peeple is not a joke. Do not download it out of curiosity. A hate download is still a download. https://t.co/ixGPiHadDH

You have to be incredibly naive and privileged to believe that #Peeple isn’t ridiculously dangerous and frankly, dumb.

no offence but if i can’t name my rapist in my writing w/o risking a lawsuit, he shouldn’t be able to write a review of me on #Peeple

#Peeple launches today. As a survivor, I’m not impressed by the changes they’ve made. https://t.co/DrbLzGfc5K

#Peeple is disgusting. You’re going to review someone & assign them a rating? You know who does that?
Slaveholders. https://t.co/4oaaZTJLLz— Courtney Cantrell (@courtcan) March 7, 2016
Oh my god #Peeple is actually happening. Not touching with a ten-foot pole. https://t.co/QQ520a25kE

Please don’t download #Peeple— unless you want to relive your middle school cyberbullying glory.
