New NFL stadium looks an awful lot like Calgary’s Saddledome

Many Calgary Flames fans had the exact same thought when seeing renderings of a new stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs, who play out of Arrowhead Stadium, are in the early stages of putting together a $3-billion domed stadium, which they expect to be ready for 2031. On Wednesday, some renderings of the new stadium were released, and it looks an awful lot like the Scotiabank Saddledome.

While the inside of the building is obviously drastically different, the outside of the building has the same horse-saddle-like design for a roof. It’s a very unique concept which, for many years, has made the Saddledome one of the NHL’s more iconic buildings.

“This looks very familiar,” one Flames fan replied to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on X.

There were plenty of other Flames fans who had similar opinions, with one stating, “The Kansas City Chiefs saw the Saddledome and said, ‘copy, paste.'”

This building will come at an interesting time, as it will be built at a similar time to when the Saddledome will be demolished.

This upcoming NHL season is the last at the Saddledome, as the new home of the Flames, Scotia Place, is expected to be ready for the 2027-28 season. As exciting and overdue a new arena is in Calgary, it will also be bittersweet for many to see the Saddledome torn down. The building has served as the home of the Flames since 1983.

The good news for those who are sad to see the Saddledome go is that they can take a trip out to Kansas City as soon as 2031 to see this new building and feel a hint of nostalgia.
