Three deaths, 218 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Alberta

In a Friday press conference, Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the province has seen 218 new known cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

This brings the province’s known total to 5,573.

She noted that there have also been three new deaths in the province that were coronavirus-related, all occurring at continuing care centres.

This brings Alberta’s total coronavirus-related deaths to 92.

Hinshaw also stated that there are currently 580 active cases at continuing care centres throughout the province.

Hinshaw noted that there have been 921 confirmed cases at the Cargill meatpacking plant in High River, and 390 cases at the JBS meat plant in Brooks.

An outbreak was also detected at the Amazon fulfillment centre in Balzac, with five cases confirmed, though it is unclear if these cases are linked.

A total of 2,359 people have recovered from coronavirus in Alberta so far.
