A huge $6M beach volleyball sports dome is being built in Calgary

Calgary’s beach volleyball scene is on track for a massive expansion following the approval of building permits for a brand-new, $6,000,000 sports dome in the city’s northeast.
The National Beach Volleyball League (NBVL) Indoor Volleydome will offer a 20,000 sq. ft. indoor beach volleyball facility, as well as a 42,000 sq. ft. outdoor beach volleyball court area.Â
The dome will be open seven days a week, year-round, with the outdoor court areas being active in the spring and summer. The project will also include parking and infrastructure that will accommodate users for both the indoor and outdoor areas at peak times.Â
The NBVL was founded by Ben Saxton, who is originally from Calgary. It started in Vancouver and has since expanded to Calgary and Edmonton. The league is aimed at cultivating a professional environment for both men’s and women’s beach volleyball.Â

The new facility will be constructed at 3688 48th Ave. NE, in the YYC airport recreation district. As of February 2025, the Calgary Airport Authority issued a notice of determination, which found that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, and a building permit was granted on Sept. 2, 2025.
The project site will allow for the future development of another indoor facility, which could be up to 27,000 sq. ft., as well as room for additional parking.Â
The NBVL Calgary league currently operates out of The Beach YYC, located in southeast Calgary, a year-round indoor volleyball facility spanning 13,000 sq. ft. and featuring over 700 tonnes of sand, as well as the CBVA Beach Courts in Valleyview Park.
Construction of the NBVL Volleydome is projected to take place in 2025-2026, creating a new home for professional beach volleyball right here in Calgary.
