NBA bans Warriors owner for 1 year and fines him $500K for Lowry incident

The NBA has announced that Golden State Warriors minority owner Mark Stevens has been banned from attending games for one year and fined $500,000.

The decision was made by the league in response to Stevens’ actions during an incident with Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry. Stevens, who was sitting courtside, pushed and directed obscene language at Lowry, after the Raptors star dove into the front row (but not into him) while chasing a loose ball.

“He reached over and put his hands on me for no reason,” Lowry explained to ESPN after the game. “Then he said some vocal words to me and repeated them repeatedly. In our league, there’s no place for that. Honestly, I hope he’s never allowed to come to an NBA game, because he shouldn’t have did that.”

A Silicon Valley venture capitalist reportedly worth $2.3 billion, Stevens has been a part-owner of the Warriors since 2013. The Warriors issued an apology on Thursday and said Stevens would miss the remainder of the 2019 NBA Finals.

LeBron James also weighed in on the matter, calling for a “swift action for his actions” before ending a lengthy Instagram rant with the hashtag: “#PrivilegeAintWelcomeHere.”
