The 24,000-sq-ft store will act as a retail space as well as a community hub for clinics, meetups, classes, and workshops in all things outdoors, and will feature a unique open-concept bike shop where Calgarians can bring their rides in for service, repairs, and fittings.

“We’re excited to expand our product offerings, experiences, and community engagement to over 450,000 existing and new MEC members across Calgary,” said Sandy Treagus, Chief Financial Officer, Mountain Equipment Co-op, in a release.

“We’re committed to investing in Calgary South and empowering its growing population to lead active lives by funding local initiatives and creating an inclusive community hub for outdoor adventure. With Seton’s vast green spaces, parks and accessible urban developments, it was a natural choice for our fourth Alberta location.”

The store will have a soft open on Saturday, September 1, inviting would-be customers to take a look at the new MEC. The grand opening will take place a week later on Saturday, September 8.

MEC’s current and only store is open in downtown Calgary at 830 10th Avenue SW, and a third MEC is set to open in the Trinity Hills development by the end of 2019.

The new store in the Seton Urban District, MEC Calgary South, is part of a 15-year urban development plan by Brookfield Residential that will see up to 120,000 people living in the area.
