A park in Calgary with dazzling downtown views is the perfect spot for a photo or two, and it also boasts some interesting history.

Nestled in the Mount Royal area of Calgary is Evamy Ridge Park, which is perfectly perched atop a hill and offers some of the best views of the downtown core in the city.

The park, also known as Hillcrest Hill or Cliff Bungalow Escarpment, is a beloved parkland that borders the neighbourhoods of Cliff Bungalow and Mount Royal.

It offers historic views of downtown and was even a gift from Canadian Pacific Rail in 1920, with the understanding that it would be kept as parkland, according to the City.

A plaque at the entrance of the park mentions the man after whom the park is named, architect Michael Everett Evamy.

Evamy was born in 1933 in England and passed away in Calgary in 1994.

Evamy was educated in London, England, where he graduated with honours from architectural college before being commissioned in the Royal Engineers and serving on active duty in Cyprus with the British Army.

In 1957, following marriage to his wife Catherine, he immigrated to Vancouver, B.C., moving later to Calgary, where he became a Canadian citizen in 1965. As a principal in the prestigious architectural firm of The Cohos Evamy Partners, Michael participated in the design of many significant and award-winning buildings in Alberta and across Canada.

He served his profession in various capacities and was president of the Alberta Association of Architects from 1975 to 1976. In 1977, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

“Evamy Ridge embodies the warmth of its community and lifts the spirit of its citizens with its lovely vista. This park has historical and geographical significance to the area known as Hillcrest Hill. The beauty of this park has been enjoyed by past generations and will be preserved as a park and enjoyed by citizens of Calgary for generations to come,” the plaque added.

Earlier this decade, the park underwent some upgrades, with construction work bringing improved access to and from the historic views of Evamy Ridge Park and open space, a designated trail, and the installation of staircases that lead down into Cliff-Bungalow/Mission.

If you are also a fan of mega homes, a mansion that sits right beside the park is absolutely staggering and worth a look, too.
