Loblaws introduces cricket powder to President’s Choice line-up

Insect protein powder is going mainstream. Canada’s largest grocery chain has just introduced Cricket Powder to its line-up of store brand President’s Choice goods.

Farmed in Canada and made of 100% cricket powder, the new staple on store shelves is being touted as a sustainable food source and a high source of protein, B12, calcium, and fibre. It’s is being billed as “a versatile ingredient that [brings] a subtle earthy flavour to food, or if used in small amounts, no taste at all.”

“With our President’s Choice® brand we’re always looking to bring the new and the next to Canadians,” says Kathlyne Ross, VP of product development and innovation at Loblaw in a press release. “By making products like Cricket Powder widely available in our grocery stores, we are giving Canadians the option to not only try something new, but to also make a conscious decision on what they eat and how it impacts the environment.”

Not sure what to do with cricket powder? According to the product description on the President’s Choice website, cricket powder available in stores now is “finely ground with a mild taste, it can be added to smoothies, sauces, chili, curries and baking batters.”
